New policing unit to operate under Budapest's authorities
Starting January 1st, the BKK policing unit will operate under the jurisdiction of the Budapest Public Area Supervisory Directorate (FÖRI), as announced by Kiss Ambrus, head of the Mayor’s Office, to Magyar Nemzet.
The unit will be managed by a deputy director and will initially consist of 75 positions, supplemented by 20 additional law enforcement officers working through subcontractors for BKK or BKV. Kiss explained that the unit will leverage existing public area supervisors within FÖRI due to their authority in certain situations.
He noted that increasing the number of police officers, rather than public area supervisors, would be more beneficial for maintaining order on public transport.
The initiative aims not to target homeless individuals.
Instead, it focuses on ensuring the safety of displaced individuals from transport stops, particularly during the winter.
The BKK-policing concept was proposed by Dávid Vitézy, who initially envisioned a 200-member team, and the City Assembly has approved its implementation.
