Hungary experienced an unusually cold spell over November 10-12, 2023, with an average national temperature of just 1.2 degrees Celsius.
This is nearly 5 degrees below the 1991-2020 average of 6.1 degrees, according to a report by HungaroMet Zrt.
Such low temperatures for this period were last observed in 1995, when averages fell below 2 degrees Celsius.
Historically, these temperatures rank as the ninth coldest since 1901.
The coldest recorded for the period was in 1988 at minus 3.4 degrees, while the warmest was 13.3 degrees in 1951.
Notably, the average temperature in Hungary's northern and northeastern regions remained below freezing during these three days.
Unusually, in the Mátra and Bükk mountain ranges, higher altitudes experienced milder weather compared to the base, contrary to typical temperature patterns.
