Hungary's NVB Clears Referendum Proposal for Christmas Eve Holiday
Referendum proposal on declaring December 24 a public holiday moves forward.
The National Election Committee (NVB) of Hungary approved a referendum initiative during its Wednesday session to designate December 24 as a public holiday.
The referendum proposal was submitted by the Trade Union of Commercial Employees.
Currently, public holidays in Hungary include January 1, March 15, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May 1, Pentecost Monday, August 20, October 23, November 1, and December 25-26.
Voters will be asked whether they agree that December 24 should become a public holiday starting in 2025.
With a vote of 10 in favor and 2 against, the NVB found the proposed referendum question in compliance with the constitutional and legal requirements.
The decision is not final, allowing for legal appeals to be filed with the Kúria within 15 days.
