Controversial Appointment at Győr's City Council Meeting
Mayor's veto not enough to block new CEO appointment amidst political tensions
A recent extraordinary city council meeting in Győr, Hungary, highlighted deep divisions within the local government led by opposition mayor Bence Pintér.
The Fidesz-majority council approved the appointment of Eszter Szombati-Serfőző as the CEO of Győr Projekt Kft., despite Pintér's previous veto.
Pintér opposed both the appointment and the outsourcing of cultural and sport events to Győr Projekt.
The meeting included testimonies from Szombati-Serfőző and the former CEO, László Nagy Gergely, who defended his tenure by highlighting cost-cutting measures and energy-efficient upgrades during his leadership.
Former mayor Zsolt Borkai, now a council member, criticized the politically charged nature of the debate.
Allegations of conflicts of interest were raised against the new CEO due to her existing ties to the facilities managed by Győr Projekt.
Additionally, questions arose about her connections to influential figures, including Péter Bolla.
Despite the controversy, Szombati-Serfőző pledged to maintain transparency and address conflicts.
Finally, the council rejected a proposal to delay Nagy's dismissal and approved Szombati-Serfőző's appointment with 14 votes in favor, amid 6 abstentions.
