Ukrainians Endure a Difficult Night as Russians Attack Power Plants

In a series of Russian missile and drone attacks, central and western Ukrainian thermal and hydroelectric power plants were targeted, announced by the national power grid operator Ukrenergo on Friday.
The energy facilities were hit overnight in a massive and combined assault, the company reported via the messaging application Telegram. The attacks have damaged thermal and hydroelectric power plants in the central and western regions, according to the announcement.

Regional officials reported that Russian forces attacked the infrastructure near the city of Dnipro, in the Kamianske district. At least one person was wounded in the attacks, they added.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko also stated that power plants in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions were targeted. He revealed on his Facebook page that the power generating facilities were hit by drones and missiles.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal later stated in an announcement that the energy facilities of six Ukrainian regions had been attacked. He emphasized that Ukraine needs more air defense systems to secure critical infrastructure and protect its citizens.

According to the Ukrainian military, the air force destroyed 58 out of 60 attacking drones launched from Russia overnight, and shot down 26 out of 39 missiles.

"The enemy launched a significant missile and air strike against Ukraine's fuel and energy sector, employing various types of missiles and attack drones," the military stated.

Ukrainian television reported explosions in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Khmelnytsky regions, as well as in the city of Dnipro. Russian cruise missiles were detected in Ukrainian airspace.

DTEK, the largest privately-owned power provider, announced that three of its thermal power plants were attacked. "The equipment was severely damaged. Following the conclusion of the attack, engineers from the power company immediately began repairs," the company stated.

The state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz also reported that its facilities were targeted in an attack on Friday morning. "Russian attacks targeted facilities of the Naftogaz group, but no serious damage occurred," the company noted in a statement, which did not provide further details.
