The EU has launched investigations into TikTok, scrutinizing the app for its potentially addictive nature and its effectiveness in safeguarding children's privacy as per the Digital Services Act.
The probe, which could result in fines if violations are found, will also examine TikTok's transparency regarding advertising and user age verification.
Commissioner Thierry Breton highlighted suspicions of TikTok's failure to comply with youth protection regulations, including issues related to compulsive usage and privacy settings.
TikTok, with 125 million monthly users in Europe, has been previously urged to detail its protective measures for children's wellbeing and its management of illicit content.
This inquiry into TikTok follows EU actions against another company for content issues post the Israel-Hamas conflict. TikTok asserts its dedication to youth safety and expresses readiness to collaborate with the EU Commission.
