In a recent discussion, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO suggested that Hungary's Prime Minister understands the alliance is stronger with Sweden as a member.
According to the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, news about Sweden's impending accession to the alliance could be announced shortly. JULIANNE SMITH told Euronews' correspondent in Brussels that Hungary, even if it is the last to do so, will ratify Sweden's membership.
"We have assurances from Hungary that they will move forward on this issue and see it through. The Hungarians understand, Prime Minister Orbán understands, that we are all stronger with Sweden in this alliance. It is good for Sweden and good for the NATO alliance. This is an important step for our alliance," said the ambassador.
The decision sends a clear message to Russian President PUTIN that he miscalculated when he assumed NATO would respond weakly to his actions in Ukraine. Instead, the alliance has grown stronger and more united than ever, the diplomat added. Julianne Smith also addressed widespread fears concerning a possible re-election of
DONALD TRUMP and the fear that he would take the U.S. out of NATO. She believes there is always a difference between what candidates say in a campaign and what actually happens.
“It's too early to draw certain conclusions. I mean, first and foremost, let's see who wins the U.S. election and go from there,” she said.
The ambassador affirmed that all NATO members would continue to support Ukraine, with the alliance focusing on securing its eastern flank.
