Mayor Suggests Taking a Closer Look at Judit Varga’s Reaction
During the Assembly of the Capital, Mayor Karácsony Gergely was criticized by Zsolt Wintermantel, leader of the Fidesz–KDNP faction, regarding the proposed development in Rákosrendező.
Wintermantel referenced the mayor's previous statements about the "mini Dubai" in Zugló, emphasizing the need for affordable housing and a park town for Budapest residents instead of skyscrapers and luxury apartments, to avoid creating monofunctional urban areas.
Wintermantel pointed out that similar issues did not arise with the Marina Part project in District XIII, where real estate functions were almost exclusively developed, even altering the Danube’s flood defense line, starting square meter prices at 2 million HUF. He accused Karácsony of always saying no to previous development plans and investments, including the City Park project (including the House of Hungarian Music), the Southern Circular Railway, and the Puskás Stadium, without being able to offer any alternatives himself.
In response, the Mayor did not comment directly on the Marina Part benchmark but drew a parallel between the mini-Dubai plan and a similar investment in Belgrade, which he described as a cautionary tale in urban planning. This investment in the Serbian capital supposedly led to a 2-degree increase in average temperatures due to the concrete developments, emphasizing the importance of leveraging brownfield sites for representative buildings near the city center to make it a livable area for residents.
Furthermore, the Mayor jabbed at the right wing by recommending everyone watch a video of Antal Rogán discussing his involvement with the Schadl dossier, hinting at the governing party's tendency to preach disinformation in the capital. He compared this to the allegedly problematic design of the House of Music in the City Park, constructed by the government.
Fidesz representative Hassay Zsófia spoke on the proposed extension of the Mocsárosdűlő natural reserve by an additional 51 hectares, suggesting that another 13 hectares should be protected for recreational purposes and the construction of parking spaces, which would increase vehicle traffic. The previous district leadership had already issued a modification ban on this area.
Kiss László, a district mayor, remarked that plans for the area were made public during a city consultation, including those that prompted a modification ban by the District III council in 2018, aiming to protect the area from development. The current city administration has reclassified this area as a nature reserve and is set to carry out habitat rehabilitation across 75 hectares with EU support for biodiversity.
Deputy Mayor Kiss Ambrus highlighted the Capital's contribution to the national budget, with Mayor Karácsony lamenting the underfunding of Budapest since the tenure of his predecessor, István Tarlós. Despite generating 37% of Hungary’s GDP, the capital and its workers, many of whom aren't Budapest residents, face government austerity measures.
Karácsony pointed out that the city's budget has decreased by more than 30% relative to GDP between 2019–23, arguing that maintaining the 2019 funding level could provide the city with 90 billion HUF more annually. He stressed that the current financial situation is unsustainable.
Renovation of the Flórián Square Overpasses to Begin This Year
Following approval of the necessary funding, renovation work on the overpasses connecting Szentendrei Road and Árpád Bridge, built over four decades ago, will commence. The project, ensuring the passage of tens of thousands of vehicles daily, will not only involve resurfacing but also repairs to any damages to the concrete structures, with completion expected by 2025.
