The investigative judge of the Central District Court of Buda has ordered the one-month detention of a man suspected of causing a deadly traffic accident in Újpest on Monday, as announced on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Metropolitan Court of Budapest.
According to József Tamás Szabó, the investigative judge justified the detention due to the risk of the suspect fleeing, hiding, reoffending, and the fact that there are several proceedings ongoing against the man.
The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) previously reported that the 40-year-old man, after several days of evading authorities, was apprehended by police officers in Szigetszentmiklós on Thursday and has made a confession. During his interrogation, he admitted to driving on Monday despite being banned from driving, thus causing the accident in Újpest.
The police added that after the man's capture, they conducted a drug test which returned a positive result. The man was taken into custody for sample collection, then interrogated on the solid suspicion of causing a fatal accident due to negligence, failing to render assistance, and driving whilst prohibited.
According to the BRFK, the accident occurred around 7:30 PM this past Monday in the IV district of the capital, on Rózsa Street at the intersection of Deák Ferenc Street, where a
Mercedes R320 passenger car collided with three vehicles that were waiting at a red light. One of the cars crashed into a lamppost, while the other two were pushed into a bus.
Three people were injured in the accident: one of them died at the scene, and the other two injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The suspect left the scene without providing assistance, failed to leave his details, and did not check on the condition of the victims, as per the earlier statement by the police.
