In the small region near Sümeg, Hungary, a 38-year-old man stands accused of violently assaulting his roommate, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

The assault, which took place on the afternoon of January 11, has led to the arrest of the alleged assailant as ordered by a local court.

According to Ildikó Gulyás, spokesperson for the Veszprém County Prosecutor's Office, the prosecution sought the suspect's detention due to concerns over potential flight risk, possible repeat offenses, and the probability of hindering the investigation.

The court granted this request and ordered the suspect to be held for a month in pre-trial detention.

It is important to note that the order is not yet final, as appeals may be forthcoming.

The incident reportedly began as a verbal altercation between the two men, who lived together in a makeshift dwelling on the property of the accused.

The accused had taken in the victim, who was homeless, during the previous summer.

What started as a domestic quarrel escalated quickly when the homeowner allegedly struck the victim, pushed him onto a bed, and proceeded to assault him severely with his fists.

The victim did not seek medical attention immediately; however, four days following the incident, he went to the hospital due to severe pain.

Medical examinations revealed that he had sustained injuries considered life-threatening, including two fractured ribs and a pneumothorax, commonly known as a collapsed lung.

This case raises questions about the complexities of domestic arrangements involving displaced or homeless individuals and highlights the challenges law enforcement and judicial bodies face in addressing such incidents.
