In a noteworthy development, the European Commission has endorsed Hungary's medium-term fiscal plan, a move that marks a temporary easing in the historically tense relations between Budapest and Brussels.

The approval came on Thursday after protracted discussions over Hungary's budgetary compliance with the European Union's fiscal rules.

Hungary's proposal, initially delayed due to a missed deadline, saw further postponements over disagreements regarding growth projections.

Hungary maintained that its economic performance this year would significantly enhance its tax revenues, consequently shrinking the budget deficit.

Both sides have since reached a consensus, agreeing on a plan to reduce Hungary's budget deficit from last year's 4.9% of GDP to 2.5% by 2026, thereby aligning with the EU's 3% deficit threshold.

A senior EU official mentioned the importance of updated economic data, which guided the ongoing technical discussions between EU and Hungarian officials.

Growth estimates and other technicalities formed the crux of these negotiations, according to the official.

Hungary's plan is one of the 21 out of 22 submitted medium-term fiscal plans that have received the Commission's approval, with the Netherlands being the sole exception due to a negative assessment.

Additionally, five member states, including Germany, have been granted extensions to submit their budget plans, reflecting the significance of aligning such interests with election cycles, such as the impending federal elections in Germany.

Despite the Commission's endorsement, significant discord remains between Budapest and Brussels.

Notably, approximately €19 billion in EU funds earmarked for Hungary—equivalent to 10% of its GDP—are currently suspended.

This freeze remains due to ongoing concerns regarding corruption, judicial independence, and issues related to migrant treatment in Hungary.

Hungary's fiscal challenges extend beyond the endorsement; it remains one of eight EU member states currently facing an 'excessive deficit procedure' (EDP) from the European Commission, a formal reprimand aimed at rectifying high budget deficits.

Moreover, the EU Commission is poised to decide whether Austria, which recently submitted a budget geared towards deficit reduction, will also face an EDP. Preliminary discussions between Gunter Mayr, Austria's Finance Minister, and Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU Commissioner for the Economy, have reportedly shown positive signs.

This fiscal negotiation plays out against a broader backdrop of complex EU politics, including debates over sanctions against Russia and internal procedural challenges related to the decision-making processes among member states.
