Unusual Turn in Former Mayor's Car Ownership Raises Questions in Nagykőrös

Unusual Turn in Former Mayor's Car Ownership Raises Questions in Nagykőrös

Sale of Official Vehicle Raises Eyebrows After the Local Elections
In an unexpected twist following last year's elections, the sale of a municipal vehicle that previously served Szabolcs Czira, the former mayor of Nagykőrös, has come under scrutiny.

Shortly after his retirement, the local government sold a 2020 Skoda Superb at a significantly reduced price, and the car soon resurfaced in the city, with an ex-mayor seen driving a similar vehicle with a new license plate.

Nagykőrös resident, perplexed by the coincidence, reported seeing Czira driving the same model car in late October, only with a different registration number.

The original Skoda Superb, which was a 2020 top-spec model, had previously belonged to the local government and had been registered on April 14, 2020.

Records from the Vehicle Service Platform show that the original car had changed hands and was now owned by a third party.

This information, combined with the rapid resale of the vehicle, has sparked suspicion and inquiry from the community.

Szabolcs Czira, a long-serving member of the Fidesz party, held the office of mayor from 1998 until the recent election cycle when he chose not to run again.

His successor, Attila Körtvélyesi, also from Fidesz, assumed office in October and quickly made the decision to sell the vehicle.

When questioned about this decision, Körtvélyesi's office provided a terse response stating that the car was returned to a dealer on October 8, 2024, in exchange for a fee.

The timeline of events and the sale price of 980,000 forints—a tenth of the car's estimated market value—according to experts who noted that with under 85,000 kilometers, the vehicle could have fetched closer to 10 million forints.

The car, despite possessing high-end features such as a two-liter engine and DSG gearbox, was undervalued, raising eyebrows among observers.

An investigative effort by concerned citizens led to the release of the car purchase and sale agreements through a formal request submitted to the municipality.

Public disclosures revealed that Brill Kft., an entity from which the car was originally acquired, was also the buyer.

The swift transaction led to questions about the legal and ethical framework under which such a sale could proceed.

According to municipal regulations, the sale of public assets priced under 1 million forints can be executed at the mayor's discretion without broader council approval.

Despite outreach to current Mayor Körtvélyesi for clarification on potential ties between the car's sale price and its subsequent ownership by Czira, no concrete answers were provided, only a reiteration that municipal vehicles remain city property.

Correspondingly, attempts to reach former Mayor Czira via his business, Arany-Tej Kft., on whether he had resumed possession or use of the vehicle, have yet to yield a response.

The community remains eager for a resolution to clarify the ethics and fairness behind the sale.
