The U.S. President engaged in talks with the Ukrainian leader following a significant prisoner exchange with Russia.
U.S. President
Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the ongoing war and the prospects for peace, the White House announced.
This meeting occurred one day after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian defense ministry reported that Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner exchange involving 175 individuals, with President Zelensky confirming this as one of the largest exchanges to date, including an additional 22 severely injured soldiers released from captivity.
The atmosphere of the meeting remains tense, particularly following a recent public dispute between Zelensky and Trump regarding the future of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the conditions for a ceasefire agreement.
Last month, diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the U.S. appeared fragile after a heated exchange occurred between the two leaders in the presence of the press regarding the war.
Trump accused Zelensky of risking a third world war and stated that the Ukrainian president should not speak disrespectfully in the White House regarding Americans or the U.S. president.
Following this confrontation, Zelensky left the White House abruptly, and Trump subsequently paused military aid shipments and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
Despite the past tensions, the relationship between Zelensky and Trump has shown signs of improvement.
Zelensky has expressed gratitude to the United States for its support, stating earlier this month a willingness to work towards peace under Trump's 'strong leadership.' Negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. have since primarily been led by negotiating teams and diplomats, with officials from both sides meeting in Saudi Arabia last week to discuss proposals for a 30-day ceasefire.
Trump announced the conclusion of his conversation with Zelensky on social media, describing the discussion as 'very good' and lasting approximately an hour.
The conversation largely built upon the previous day's discussions with Putin to align the needs and requests of Russia and Ukraine.
Trump emphasized progress towards a solution and mentioned that he had asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to provide detailed briefings on the discussion points.
Further official details from the call are expected, as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is scheduled to hold a press briefing at 6 PM local time to provide additional information.
Meanwhile, buses transporting released Ukrainian prisoners have arrived in the Chernigiv region of northern Ukraine.
President Zelensky confirmed via social media that among the 175 returning soldiers are severely wounded individuals who will receive immediate medical and psychological care.
Zelensky has referred to this operation as one of the largest prisoner exchanges conducted since the beginning of the war.
