Putin Shows Interest in a 30-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine During Ongoing Conflict

The Russian President expresses apprehensions regarding the U.S. ceasefire proposal while military operations persist in the Kursk region.
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed that he has 'serious questions' about the United States' suggestion for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, while also showing a willingness to engage in dialogue.

The proposal, recently approved by Ukraine during negotiations with the U.S., has faced criticism from the Kremlin.

Putin remarked, 'I think we need to converse with our American counterparts... perhaps have a phone call with President Trump to discuss this with him,' hinting at possible diplomatic interaction with U.S. leaders.

The United States, represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has stressed the importance of Russia agreeing to a ceasefire without preconditions.

In response to Putin's statements, U.S. President Trump characterized them as 'promising,' but pointed out that the finer points of a full agreement still need to be resolved.

He conveyed a sense of urgency for a solution, stating, 'I'd love to meet with him or talk to him. But we have to wrap this up quickly.'

Putin's comments were accompanied by assertions of Russian military successes at the front lines.

He noted that Russian troops are 'advancing in nearly all areas' and indicated that Russia would determine its future actions based on the changing situation on the battlefield.

The ongoing conflict, now in its third year, saw Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrive in Moscow to further discuss the ceasefire proposal.

Witkoff is expected to meet with Putin in a private setting, according to Kremlin sources.

Recent military updates from Russia reported the reclamation of the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region, which holds past strategic importance for Ukraine.

The Russian defense ministry declared that they had 'liberated' Sudzha along with two other settlements near the border.

This area had been controlled by Ukraine following a cross-border attack last August.

As the conflict escalates, Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky hinted at troop withdrawals in the Kursk region.

At the same time, the military administration in the Sumy region mandated the evacuation of eight villages near the border due to increased hostilities and relentless shelling.

Putin, who visited Kursk in military dress, expressed a wish for Russian forces to 'fully liberate' territories currently under Ukrainian control.

Meanwhile, military operations are ongoing, with reports of Russian forces shooting down 77 Ukrainian drones and Ukraine's air defenses effectively countering aerial threats.

In a complicating factor for diplomatic negotiations, Russia has dismissed the inclusion of foreign peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of any ceasefire arrangement, opposing Ukraine's calls for international military assistance.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova reinforced this position, stating that any foreign military presence would be seen as direct intervention in the conflict.

As both sides persist in hostilities, analysts warn against making direct correlations between the U.S.'s halted intelligence-sharing activities and recent developments on the battlefield, although it has been confirmed that Washington will resume support for Ukraine ahead of ongoing negotiations.
