Police Respond to Knife Threat at Budapest's Eastern Railway Station

Officers fired warning shots to subdue a woman threatening them with a knife
On Monday evening, a significant incident occurred at Budapest's Eastern Railway Station when a young woman brandished a knife and threatened police officers.

In response to the escalating situation, officers discharged a warning shot to neutralize the threat.

The authorities have initiated an investigation against the woman, charging her with preparation for murder and other unspecified crimes, as confirmed by Katalin Kovács, spokesperson for the Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office.

The incident unfolded when the woman called the police, expressing distress and indicating she was at the station with a knife, intending to harm a person—specifically targeting law enforcement.

Arriving officers were threatened by the woman wielding a 20-centimeter blade, as she made stabbing motions despite multiple police orders to disarm.

When reinforcements arrived, the woman continued to resist, attempting to keep the officers at bay.

The warning shot was fired toward the ground, prompting her to drop the knife, after which she was apprehended.

During this phase of the response, a minor injury was reported involving a student from a police officer training program.

Following the arrest, she was taken into custody and formally questioned regarding her intent, specifically for preparation for murder and armed violence against a public official.

The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office is also examining the circumstances surrounding the use of firearm by the police.

The incident has heightened security concerns in the city, leading to increased public scrutiny regarding police handling of threats involving weapons.

As investigations continue, further details are expected to emerge regarding both the woman’s motives and the police's response protocols.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, an unnamed individual threatened a primary school in Újpest with a bomb.

Two mobile phone calls were made to a teacher, stating that an explosion would occur at the institution on Wednesday.

Subsequent investigations by the police found no explosives on the premises.

Detectives from the Budapest Police Headquarters’ IV District launched a criminal investigation for danger to public safety.

They quickly identified the callers as former students of the school, resulting in the arrest of two girls aged 14 and 15, and two boys aged 14 and 16. Bomb threats in Hungary have noticeably increased, with hundreds of schools reporting similar threats earlier in the year, though no explosives were found in any of the cases.

In another related event, unexploded ordnance was discovered at a gymnasium in Gödöllő, prompting a swift response from military bomb disposal units.

The search turned up several World War II-era grenades and ammunition, which were subsequently secured for destruction.

The rapid response ensured that no civilians were endangered, as the school had been evacuated prior to the clearance operation.

These incidents reflect ongoing safety challenges and the complexities in managing public security amid rising threats.
