Hungary's President, Sulyok Tamás, has signed a legislative amendment permitting the prohibition of Pride events, as confirmed by an official notice published in the Hungarian Gazette.

The amendment to the law governing assembly rights was submitted to Parliament on Monday and was approved by 136 votes in favor on Tuesday, in relation to proposed modifications aimed at enhancing child protection laws.

According to the passed legislation, future Pride parades are now explicitly prohibited.

The document detailing the legislation provided by the Parliament indicates that the proposal from the ruling parties supplements the existing assembly rights law, stating that gatherings violating the protections outlined in child protection legislation will be banned.

Proponents of the bill asserted that the protection of children necessitates legislative measures that also penalize individuals who mislead assembly authorities and conduct or participate in unlawful gatherings.

To prevent abuses, offenders may face fines categorized as public debts, subject to collection in a similar fashion to tax obligations.

Revenue generated from these fines is earmarked for child protection initiatives.

The vote was marked by disruptions from representatives of the opposition party Momentum, who attempted to interrupt proceedings by throwing papers into the parliamentary chamber.

Notable figures Bedő Dávid, Lőcsei Lajos, and independent MP Hadházy Ákos ignited smoke devices and chanted “We won’t allow it!” in protest.

The presiding officer, Latorcai János, indicated that the disruptive representatives would face sanctions.
