The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) of Hungary has taken over an inquiry regarding a network of foundations associated with Bence Rétvári, a prominent member of the Hungarian government.

This development follows reports of a Vatican-led investigation into the alleged misappropriation of public funds intended for the Zirci Cistercian Abbey.

The scrutiny centers on whether these funds were funneled to the foundations related to Rétvári rather than being used for their intended purpose.

Ágnes Vadai, a Member of Parliament from the Democratic Coalition (DK), raised a series of inquiries directed at Hungary's Chief Prosecutor, Péter Polt.

In her correspondence, she posed nine specific questions related to the investigation, highlighting concerns about potential legal violations and the apparent absence of action from the public prosecutor's office regarding the reported misconduct.

Vadai's questions included inquiries about the prosecutor's awareness of apparent legal irregularities, the obligation to initiate criminal proceedings, and whether the prosecutor's office is examining the legality of the related transactions.

She requested detailed information on the status and findings of the investigation, including any advancements made in gathering evidence and whether any suspects had been interrogated.

Polt responded briefly to Vadai's lengthy inquiry, indicating that her questions would be treated as a formal complaint and forwarded to the NIB.

He noted that the authorities would subsequently inform Vadai of the investigation's outcomes.
