The 44th Hungarian Film Festival Awards: A Return After Thirteen Years

The event celebrated over 130 films and presented key awards in various categories on February 9 at the Corvin Cinema.
The 44th Hungarian Film Festival, held after a hiatus of thirteen years, celebrated its awards ceremony on February 9, 2023, in the Korda Hall of the Corvin Cinema.

This year's festival featured more than 130 films screened over six days, attracting over 20,000 attendees.

The festival showcased films produced within the last two years, including several premieres that offered the audience their first viewing.

Among the notable awards, the main prize for Best Feature Film went to 'Magyarázat mindenre', directed by Gábor Reisz.

The best debut film, recognized by the Simó Sándor Prize, was awarded to 'Fekete pont' directed by Bálint Szimler.

In the special category for feature films, the award went to 'Véletlenül írtam egy könyvet', directed by Nóra Lakos.

The title of Best Director was awarded to Dorka Vermes for her work on 'Árni'.

Best Screenplay was given to Szabolcs Hajdu for his contributions to 'Kálmán-nap' and 'Egy százalék indián'.

In the acting categories, Hajduk Károly received the Best Male Actor award for his role in 'Mesterjátszma', while Kriszta Szorcsik was honored as Best Female Actor for her performance in 'Hasadás'.

The jury included notable members such as cinematographer Mátyás Erdély, director Bence Fliegauf, and producer Ágnes Havas, among others.

The Ecumenical Jury awarded its Best Film prize to 'Lefkovicsék gyászolnak', directed by Ádám Breier, while the jury's special prize went to 'Nyersanyag', directed by Martin Boross.

In the short film categories, 'Világvége', directed by Péter Hajmási, was named Best Short Film, and Anna Korom won Best Director for her work on 'Diamond Beauty'.

The special prize in this category went to 'Fratrum', directed by Edit Nagyistók.

The Best Feature Length Animation award was claimed by 'Kojot négy lelke', directed by Áron Gauder, while László Csáki received the Best Animation Director award for 'Kék Pelikán'.

In the short animation segment, the Best Short Animation title went to '27', directed by Flóra Anna Buda.

The Best Short Animation Director was Victoria Traub for 'Cipők és Paták', with the special prize awarded to 'Az utolsó dobás', directed by Anna Tőkés.

For documentary films, 'Az életed nélkülem', directed by Anna Rubi, took home the Best Documentary Film prize, while Erika Kapronczai received the Best Documentary Director award for her two films 'Kim' and 'Portál'.

Additionally, the special prize in this category was awarded to 'A boldogság ügynöke', co-directed by Dorottya Zurbó and Arun Bhattarai.

In the short documentary category, 'Háztűznéző', directed by Abigél Ress, won Best Short Documentary.

Judit Surányi was acknowledged as Best Short Documentary Director for 'Nyomik', and the special prize went to 'Ónody – a 60-as évek császára', directed by Tamás Almási.

The award for Best Experimental Film was presented to 'Iszap', directed by Csaba Dénes, Lehel Fazekas, Loretta Szatmári, and Orsolya Orbán, with Peter Lichter recognized as Best Experimental Director for 'The Geneva Mechanism: A Ghost Movie'.

The special prize for experimental films went to 'Dunna Imágó', credited to blanche the vidiot.

In the television series category, 'A király' was awarded Best TV Series.

Ildikó Enyedi won Best TV Series Director for 'Angyaltrombiták', and Schell Judit and Tamás Keresztes received acting awards for their performances in 'A király' and 'Marsra Magyar!', respectively.

The series also saw a special prize awarded to cinematographer Júlia Vaszari for her work on 'Angyaltrombiták'.

Additionally, the Festival Council Award for the most-watched film since the regime change was given to 'Futni mentem', directed by Gábor Herendi.
