Slovakia's political landscape is becoming increasingly unstable as opposition parties plan to initiate a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Robert Fico's administration.

This decision arises from mounting dissatisfaction over Fico's foreign policy approach and his neglect of critical domestic matters.

The ruling leftist-nationalist coalition, headed by Fico, has seen its parliamentary majority shrink to just 76 out of 150 seats in recent months.

This diminished support, alongside internal disputes among coalition partners, has left the government susceptible to challenges.

Central to the opposition’s criticism is Fico's alignment with Moscow and his management of Slovakia’s relations with Russia.

The Prime Minister's recent actions, including a trip to Moscow for discussions with President Vladimir Putin about a disruption in Russian gas supplies to Slovakia, have raised concerns.

Slovakia’s gas supply via Ukraine was interrupted, which Fico claims has led to substantial economic losses totaling 1.5 billion euros in increased energy prices and lost transit fees.

This economic pressure, along with Slovakia’s high budget deficit and persistent issues in the healthcare sector, has fueled opposition discontent.

Fico's position on the Ukraine conflict has also sparked criticism.

In a significant departure from many of Slovakia’s European allies, Fico terminated state-funded military aid to Ukraine and has even threatened to stop humanitarian support.

His reluctance to engage with Kyiv has further distanced opposition members, who view his foreign policy as a dangerous shift away from Slovakia's commitments to the European Union and NATO.

Michal Simecka, leader of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, condemned Fico’s foreign policy and failure to address domestic issues.

“Robert Fico has left Slovakia.

Instead of being in his home country and working on solving problems, he is flying around the world and bowing to dictators,” Simecka remarked.

The timing of the no-confidence vote is uncertain, but it would require a majority to succeed.

If successful, the vote could lead Slovakia’s President to appoint a new government.

Alternatively, Parliament might call for an early election, which would need backing from both opposition and government members.

As the political crisis unfolds, Slovakia stands at a crossroads, with many citizens and politicians questioning the direction of the country's foreign policy and governance.

Fico's government, once a bastion of leftist-nationalist policies, now faces a daunting challenge in maintaining its hold on power amid growing calls for accountability and a return to Slovakia's European roots.
