Salary Increase for Instructors and Researchers at Budapest University of Technology and Economics

Budapest University of Technology and Economics introduces new minimum wage structure for academic staff amid institutional reforms.
Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) has implemented a new minimum salary structure for its academic staff, effective from January 1, a move that marks an initial phase in the institution's broader restructuring efforts.

According to a statement from the university, this initiative is part of a strategy to gradually align the salaries of its employees with industry standards.

The university's leadership, including Rector Charaf Hassan and Chancellor Miklós Verseghi-Nagy, indicated that further salary increases are planned in subsequent years.

Under the new policy, the base salary for assistant lecturers will rise from 326,000 HUF to 500,000 HUF, while professors with a doctoral degree will see their base salary increase from 777,000 HUF to 1,000,000 HUF.

The raise also extends to non-teaching and non-research staff at BME, with the extent of their salary increases determined by the heads of the respective organizational units.

The university has also commenced the initial phases of an institutional restructuring model, with four working groups actively engaged in addressing various aspects of the transformation, including its financial, labor, and organizational-operational components.

The restructuring process is anticipated to be completed by April 2025. Despite these changes, state-funded scholarships will continue to be available for prospective students at BME.

In December of last year, the university's Senate approved a proposal empowering Rector Charaf Hassan to negotiate with the state regarding the university’s transition to a new operational model.

Discussions have been ongoing about the possibility of BME exiting the state's direct oversight.

Unlike other universities that have shifted to foundation-based models, Rector Hassan envisions a model where BME's operational rights would be transferred to a corporate structure, with shares potentially sold to companies such as Mol.

In an interview with Telex, Charaf Hassan expressed his preference for this corporate model over the foundation model, emphasizing different approaches to issues such as asset management.

He dismissed concerns about state 'stripping' of resources, stating that state maintenance is no longer suitable for the university's growth.

The rector also reassured stakeholders about the institution's academic autonomy.
