Hungarian Emergency Services Allocate Provincial Paramedics to Address Rising Demand in Budapest

New System Enlists 25-30 Provincial Ambulance Units Daily to Support Budapest's Emergency Services Starting Spring
Hungary's National Ambulance Service (Országos Mentőszolgálat, OMSZ) will implement a new system beginning in March or April that deploys 25-30 ambulance teams from rural areas to support Budapest's emergency services, according to Győrfi Pál, spokesperson for the OMSZ.

This measure comes in response to a significant increase in emergency calls in the capital, straining local resources.

This initiative will formalize a practice that has been utilized in the past, where paramedics from the provinces provided support in Budapest.

Under the new system, all paramedics and drivers from regional ambulance stations are required to contribute.

These personnel are expected to serve in Budapest once every two to three months as part of a structured and predictable schedule, as revealed by an internal memo released by independent MP Ákos Hadházy.

The procedure involves provincial staff traveling to Budapest, where they will be assigned ambulance vehicles at designated stations.

After completing their 16-hour shifts, they will return home using service vehicles.

Paramedics are expected to arrive in Budapest by 7 a.m. and begin their shifts at 9 a.m.

Questions have been raised regarding the inclusion of travel time in working hours, compensation for travel, and provisions for rest.

Győrfi Pál affirmed that all associated costs, including travel time compensation, will be covered.

Additionally, provisions for meals are planned.

Paramedics are not expected to work beyond their regular hours and will not receive extra compensation for this additional duty.

Accommodation facilities are available at various Budapest stations for those who prefer not to travel back immediately after their shift.

The feasibility of the scheme has come under scrutiny.

Concerns include the wellbeing of provincial crews starting shifts after an early morning commute and their potential unfamiliarity with Budapest's geography.

Despite these concerns, the move is part of a broader effort to stabilize the resource allocation given the capital's higher demand, with approximately 1,300 to 1,400 daily emergency cases, against a backdrop of relatively lower rural demand.

Efforts to recruit additional staff within Budapest are ongoing, but OMSZ faces challenges due to a saturated labor market, which complicates hiring locally.
