On February 14, 2025, Munich became the scene of a tragic incident when a 24-year-old Afghan man intentionally drove into a crowd participating in a demonstration organized by the Ver.di trade union.

Authorities have confirmed that the perpetrator faces 36 counts of attempted murder and has been placed under preliminary arrest.

During a press conference, Gabriele Tilmann, chief prosecutor for extremist and terrorist crimes in Munich, indicated that preliminary investigations point to an Islamist motivation behind the attack.

The perpetrator has admitted to accelerating his vehicle towards the group.

Prior to the attack, the individual reportedly sent messages from his phone indicating a possible intent to harm those involved in the demonstration, which focused on child protection workers.

Witness accounts from police suggest that the attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the incident.

As of now, authorities have not found any direct links between the perpetrator and a recognized extremist group or terrorist organization.

The Afghan citizen possessed a valid residency permit in Germany and had not previously faced any criminal charges.

Reports indicate that at least 36 people were injured during the attack, with two individuals, including a two-year-old girl, currently in life-threatening condition.

The ages of the injured range from two to sixty years old, comprising 32 men and 4 women.

Eight of the injured remain hospitalized in serious condition.

Tilmann clarified remarks made by the Bavarian Interior Minister suggesting the attacker had an invalid residency status, confirming instead that the man had complied with residency regulations.

Although he had previously missed reporting employment to the unemployment agency, this issue was resolved quickly without resulting in any formal charges.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence in relation to the motivations behind this incident.
