Analysis raises alarms over the potential weakening of the European Union by American think tanks.
A prominent German fact-checking platform has issued a warning regarding the presence of American thinkers aligned with former President
Donald Trump in the Bundestag.
The analysis by Correctiv noted that on January 28, Jürgen Hardt, head of the foreign affairs working group of the CDU/CSU faction, hosted a delegation from the Heritage Foundation, a Republican think tank from the United States.
The Heritage Foundation is known for its 'Project 2025,' a proposal aimed at restructuring the U.S. government, which saw some of its recommendations implemented after Trump's return to office in January 2023. According to Correctiv, the Heritage Foundation is actively promoting its ideology in Europe, with the intention of undermining the European Union (EU).
One aspect of this initiative involves a proposal called the 'Great Reset,' which is set to be presented in collaboration with the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, regarded by Correctiv as a think tank closely linked to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and funded by the Russian oil sector.
The Great Reset aims to prioritize national laws over EU law, allegedly seeking to revert the EU's legal framework to its 1957 state.
The report highlights the Heritage Foundation's efforts to forge alliances within Europe, which, according to Bundestag representative Lisa Badum from the Green party, could pose significant risks.
Badum stated that the CDU/CSU must be vigilant to avoid becoming an extension of Trump's influence in Germany.
She emphasized the need for democratic leaders to distance themselves from what she described as aspiring autocrats like Orbán and Trump.
Additionally, Badum criticized CDU/CSU proposals to acquire gas technology from Trump's associates, expressing concerns over the implications of such alliances.
The situation underscores a growing tension in European politics regarding foreign influence and the potential redefinition of democratic norms.
