Hack Attack Targets Belgian Grand Prix Organizer, Fans' Banking Information Potentially Compromised
The exact number of individuals affected by the incident in which fraudulent phishing emails were dispatched from the email address of the organizers of the Spa Grand Prix remains unknown.
Hackers have breached the official contact email address of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix, according to a report by _Bleeping Computer_.
The unauthorized intruders subsequently utilized the account to send deceitful emails to F1 enthusiasts, promising a 50 euro gift voucher on a linked webpage.
The Spa-Francorchamps circuit, famously known for the Eau-Rouge corner, is one of the iconic venues of Formula 1. The venue is set to host this year's pinnacle of motorsport competition once again at the end of July, with ticket sales already underway.
The organizers shared with _Bleeping Computer_ that on March 17, one of their email accounts was compromised by hackers who then used it to dispatch fraudulent emails to an unknown number of individuals.
Those who clicked on the links within the emails were led to a bogus website where the perpetrators solicited sensitive data from the victims, including banking and payment information.
Operators of the racetrack reacted within a few hours, issuing a series of emails to fans, warning them that the earlier email was a phishing attempt and advising against clicking on any links.
The incident has been reported to the Belgian cyber police, and an investigation is currently underway. The exact number of individuals involved is unknown; however, given that F1 races typically attract fans from numerous countries, it's possible that Hungarian fans may also be affected by the incident.
The official website spagrandprix.com remains secure, and ticket sales are proceeding as usual. Those worried that their information may have fallen into unauthorized hands can contact the organizers through the website mentioned above.
