Generational Transition in Orbán Family's Mining Business

Generational Transition in Orbán Family's Mining Business

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's nephew, Dávid Orbán, acquires a significant stake in a key family mining enterprise.
In a notable shift within Hungary's influential Orbán family business ventures, Dávid Orbán, nephew of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has acquired a 25% stake in one of the family's prominent mining companies, Gánt Kő Kft., according to reports by G7.

This development marks a significant generational transition, as the company was wholly owned by the Prime Minister's father, Győző Orbán, until January 1, when a quarter of it was gifted to his grandson.

Dávid Orbán is no stranger to the mining sector, having maintained interests in several related companies.

Since 2017, he has been a shareholder in Murobán Kft., a company specializing in gravel, sand, and clay mining.

Additionally, last autumn, he established Timolod Kft., a company focused on rock quarrying, gypsum, and chalk mining.

Furthermore, three years ago, he was appointed executive director at Dolomit Kft., the largest mining company in the Orbán family portfolio.

G7 reports that over recent years, the rapid accumulation of wealth by Prime Minister Orbán's parents has largely been propelled by Dolomit Kft.

and Gánt Kő Kft., both of which have operated with profit margins well above the industry average.

Additionally, the Orbán family's involvement in the mining sector often intersects with state finances.

Investigative reporting by Direkt36 uncovered numerous instances where these companies accessed state funds as suppliers.

G7 previously reported Dolomit Kft.'s participation as a subcontractor in public procurement projects.

Observers suggest that the generational transition at the helm of these companies is unsurprising, given that Győző Orbán, who holds the majority shares, is turning 85 this year.

Previously, it was anticipated that the mining enterprises might be taken over by Győző Orbán's sons, including the Prime Minister's brothers, who no longer play pivotal roles.

Áron Orbán, once involved in logistics for the mining companies, has since shifted his focus to arms trading and visa-related matters.

Meanwhile, the younger Győző Orbán, who held numerous positions within the family mining business, now retains only two.

According to G7, these developments suggest a likely transfer of the mining business to the family's next generation, with Dávid Orbán's increased involvement in the companies presumably preparing for this transition.
