Finn Couple Detained in Hungary for Allegedly Abusing Adopted Child

Legal action taken against a Finnish couple over the alleged mistreatment and neglect of their adopted son in Hungary.
The Pécs Court in Hungary has ordered the detention of a Finnish couple accused of endangering their adopted minor son.

This decision, announced on Thursday, modifies a previous ruling by the Pécs District Court, which had imposed judicial supervision as a preventive measure.

The detention will remain in effect until the conclusion of the initial court procedures, but no later than April 20, 2025.

The couple faces serious allegations related to the abuse of a minor, including the violation of personal liberty and the endangerment of the child’s well-being.

According to investigative data, the woman reported on July 8 that their adopted child had disappeared from their home the previous night.

She claimed that the child had previously run away several times over the past months but had always been found in the garden.

On the evening of the report, the 14-year-old boy was discovered hiding under a bush in the neighbor’s garden and was subsequently taken to a children's clinic for evaluation.

It was revealed during the investigation that the couple had moved to Hungary in the summer of 2022 with their biological child and their adopted son to a small village in Baranya County.

After their relocation, they took care of all necessary registrations for themselves and their biological child; however, they failed to register their then-12-year-old adopted son and did not enroll him in school.

Consequently, the boy did not participate in any educational activities from the autumn of 2022 until his discovery on July 8, 2024, and had not seen a doctor during this time.

Investigations found that the boy was wearing a diaper at the time of his discovery, as he had reportedly been prohibited from using the bathroom facilities in their home.

Furthermore, when the couple left the house, they would lock him in a small, windowless room off the hallway, forcing him to remain mostly in darkness.

Witness accounts suggest the boy was bathed only once a week using cold water from an outdoor tap, even in winter, with his clothing removed outdoors.

The child managed to escape on one occasion by prying off the back of a wardrobe and exiting through the kitchen balcony door.

On this occasion, the couple found him and locked him away again, but he managed to escape once more.
