Celebrating Everyday Roma Heroes in Hungary

Celebrating Everyday Roma Heroes in Hungary

The Aranypánt Award highlights the contributions of Roma individuals who enrich their communities through various professions.
The concept of being an everyday hero in Hungary transcends unique accolades; it reflects the hard work, dedication, and resilience of individuals who serve their communities.

This notion is central to the Aranypánt Award, established ten years ago by the Roma Press Center and Roma Play, which seeks to spotlight Roma individuals making significant contributions in various fields, such as education, healthcare, and the arts, while living authentically as Roma.

The 2023 award went to Major Richárd Kovács, a police officer, recognized for his community service and dedication.

Currently, there are over 800,000 Roma in Hungary, who actively shape the societal landscape alongside their fellow citizens.

The nominees for the Aranypánt Award in 2023 include a choreographer who developed a unique training system, a child protection expert devoted to creating safe environments for vulnerable populations, and a teacher who dedicates his free time to teaching adult literacy.

The Aranypánt Award aims to challenge the narrative associated with the Roma community, presenting an authentic image of their contributions while acknowledging the very real barriers they face, such as poverty, prejudice, and social isolation.

The award highlights that its recipients are not superhuman but rather represent what is achievable with opportunity, mentorship, and support.

The essence of the award emphasizes equality and the importance of recognizing the diverse and valuable roles that Roma individuals play in society.

This year, the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite among ten inspiring Roma candidates featured in the nominations.

Voting will take place on the Roma Play website, with a limit of three choices per voter.

The awards ceremony will be held on April 7, in celebration of International Roma Day, at the Budapest Jazz Club.

Among the nominees is Krisztián Budai, a prominent double bass player who has shared the stage with international stars including Ennio Morricone and Andrea Bocelli.

In addition to his music career, Budai dedicates time to fostering higher education opportunities for Roma youth and actively participates in Christian community initiatives.

His early experiences with racism during secondary school motivated him to confront stereotypes and advocate for his community.

Another nominee, Renáta Hadházi, has cemented her role as an educator and researcher.

A three-time degree holder, Hadházi teaches at an elementary school in Tiszaújváros and has launched a TikTok channel to share innovative teaching methodologies and promote literacy among adults.

Raised in a segregated neighborhood, she embodies tenacity, navigating her educational journey despite various setbacks, ultimately earning the Esélyért Award for her achievements.

Choreographer József Hámor has been influential in contemporary dance for over twenty years.

His self-developed training system offers professional quality movements to dancers while remaining true to his Roma heritage.

Despite not focusing explicitly on his ethnic background in his art, he incorporates the essence of his cultural roots into his compositions and teachings, nurturing a new generation of dancers.

The nominees exemplify the diversity within the Roma community, reflecting the power of resilience, creativity, and community spirit amid systemic challenges.

Each has carved out a path that not only paves the way for personal success but also inspires others within and beyond the Roma community.
