Keir Starmer announces deployment of combat aircraft to support Israel amid concerns of escalation with Iran.
In response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that the United Kingdom will bolster its military presence in the Middle East.
Speaking en route to the G7 summit in Canada, Starmer stated, "We are deploying resources, including combat aircraft, to the region as a form of reserve support.
I am aware of my duties and the responsibilities that fall upon me as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.”
Reports indicate that Starmer has held discussions with various world leaders, including President
Donald Trump, amidst growing apprehension about further escalation of the conflict.
Following these developments, Iranian state media reported that Tehran has issued warnings to the United States, the UK, and France, stating that military bases and naval vessels would be targeted should these nations intervene militarily on behalf of Israel.
During his flight to the G7, Starmer expressed ongoing concern regarding Iran's nuclear program while acknowledging Israel's right to self-defense.
He emphasized, "This situation must de-escalate."
Iran began its missile attacks on Israel on Friday, which followed reportedly Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities and critical Iranian leadership targets.
Neither the United States nor the United Kingdom has confirmed any military assistance for intercepting the missiles, a contrast to last year's Iranian strikes when Israel's defense was backed by international support.
On Sunday,
Donald Trump denied any involvement of the United States in an attack initiated by Israel that targeted Iranian nuclear sites and leadership, which triggered Tehran's retaliatory actions.
As the conflict entered its third day, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighted the need for negotiations to alleviate tensions within a week.
He stated, "I hope this is still possible," and noted that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are prepared to initiate immediate talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program, expressing hope that Tehran will accept the proposal.
