White House national security advisor calls for Ukraine to temper its rhetoric amid ongoing peace efforts.
The White House has intensified its pressure on Ukraine to pursue a resolution to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, urging Kiyv to moderate its critical stance and swiftly sign an agreement on mineral resources advocated by President
Donald Trump.
Mike Waltz, the White House national security advisor, stated, "They need to tone down their rhetoric and thoroughly review and sign that deal," during an interview on a news channel.
He expressed concern over Ukraine's delays in finalizing the mineral deal and the criticism directed towards Trump’s peace negotiations, labeling such responses as unacceptable in light of the support the United States has provided to Ukraine.
Waltz's comments followed a day after Trump referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a dictator.
In response, Zelensky accused Trump of living in a disinformation bubble and accused him of promoting Kremlin propaganda.
Despite the tensions, Waltz asserted that the differences between the United States and Ukraine are reconcilable, emphasizing, "The president has also expressed how much he loves the Ukrainian people."
Concerns have been raised by Ukraine and European leaders regarding their exclusion from ongoing peace negotiations, which reportedly commenced following a recent phone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Waltz, however, denied any claims that the United States had failed to consult with its allies or Ukraine in this process.
"There's a term in diplomacy for this.
It's called shuttle diplomacy, because in the past it simply hasn't worked to bring everyone to the table at once," he noted.
"So we've engaged one side, we've engaged the other side, and the process is moving forward under the guidance and leadership of President Trump."
