Hungary Extends Red Code Alert Amid Severe Cold Weather

Hungary Extends Red Code Alert Amid Severe Cold Weather

Cold snap persists with temperatures expected to drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius across the country.
The Hungarian Ministry of Interior has announced an extension of the red code alert for severe cold weather until 8 AM on Monday, February 24. According to forecasts from HungaroMet, night-time temperatures are expected to remain below minus 10 degrees Celsius in several locations across Hungary over the coming days.

This extension of the red code means that social institutions are mandated to receive homeless individuals who find themselves in distress due to the harsh weather conditions, regardless of their operational capacity.

The ministry emphasized that during this special procedure, the protection of life is the highest priority in homeless care.

Currently, night shelters across the country are operating at 86 percent capacity.

As of February 20, a total of 239 notifications had been received by dispatch services, leading to the placement of 76 individuals in homeless care institutions.

Authorities are urging citizens to contact regional dispatch services if they encounter homeless individuals in need of assistance.

Fülöp Attila, the State Secretary responsible for social policy at the Ministry of Interior, initially ordered the red code alert from 8 PM on Monday until Friday, based on the forecasts provided by HungaroMet.

Forecasts for Friday predict mostly sunny weather across much of the country, although cloud cover may persist in the Western Transdanubia region without any precipitation expected.

However, brisk winds may occur in the Northern Transdanubia, particularly around Lake Fertő.

High temperatures are anticipated to reach between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday, mostly sunny weather is expected with some cirrus clouds, although cloudier periods may occur in western and southwestern Hungary.

No precipitation is likely, with a southeasterly breeze refreshing in many areas, and winds may strengthen in some places.

Early morning temperatures are forecasted to range between minus 10 and minus 3 degrees Celsius, with even colder conditions expected in calm, frost-prone areas.

Maximum daytime temperatures are anticipated to reach between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius.

By Sunday, areas of dense cloud cover are expected predominantly in Transdanubia, while other regions may continue to experience mainly sunny, hazy weather.

There could be a slight increase in the probability of precipitation in Transdanubia, with gentle to moderate southeasterly winds.

Night-time temperatures are predicted to range from minus 9 to minus 1 degree Celsius, while clear, cold spots could register lower temperatures.

Daytime highs are expected to be between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius.

In another weather-related report, researchers at the University of Miskolc indicated that temperatures at the Mohos-töbör in the Bükk plateau reached a minimum of minus 27.6 degrees Celsius recently.

This temperature is slightly warmer than previous records set earlier in the week.

The extremely cold conditions result from the arrival of polar air masses in the Carpathian Basin.

During the clear and calm nights, the microclimates in these hollows enable significant drops in temperature.

The unique geological formations known as 'töbörs', which are closed, bowl-shaped depressions, contribute to the extreme temperatures due to their capacity to trap cold air.
