Liverpool retain interest in Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool are among a host of clubs that are reportedly interested in RB Leipzig’s Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai.

According to a report from Transfer Market Web, Liverpool are among a vast number of clubs across Europe that hold an interest in 20-year-old RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Having started out at the academy of Hungarian outfit Videoton FC in 2006, Szoboszlai moved to the youth setup Fönix Gold a year later and stayed there till 2015 when he signed for MTK Budapest. Twelve months later, he was back at the Videoton academy before being snapped up RB Salzburg in 2017.

Szoboszlai spent a year on loan with FC Liefering before being integrated into the first-team setup at RB Salzburg and the 20-year-old soon became a critical player for the Austrian giants. He went on to make 83 appearances for the club, contributing 26 goals and 35 assists before making the switch to sister-club RB Leipzig in January last year.

Upon arrival, Szoboszlai endured a torrid six-month spell due to injuries and did not feature for the Bundesliga club in the second half of the last season. However, having been drafted into the side in the new campaign, he has continued to enhance his reputation, already bagging three goals and two assists from nine matches across all competitions.

Despite his injury-riddled start with Leipzig, Szboszlai’s stock remains high as ever, with a number of top clubs in Europe such as Inter Milan, AC Milan, Lazio, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid monitoring him. And the 20-year-old has now registered on the radars of Premier League bigwigs Liverpool as well.

The Reds have lacked a proper creative playmaker ever since the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018. Adding someone of Szoboszlai’s profile would help Jurgen Klopp & co. address that while also potentially allowing a switch of formations to a 4-2-3-1 setup.

Additionally, considering that Szoboszlai can easily play out wide on either flank, he can also be a possible backup and an eventual replacement for star duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, both of whom are closing in on their thirties. Liverpool are targeting a player of such a profile, given their interest in another Bundesliga prodigy in the form of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

Szoboszlai would make an ideal alternative for the German sensation, who is attracting serious interest from several other top clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City. However, having tied him down to a new long-term contract only in May this year, it will be interesting to see if Leipzig would allow the 20-year-old to leave, especially with Dani Olmo also being linked with an exit.
