Tourism in Hungary Buoyed by Foreigners, As Domestic Travel Also Sees Uptick
The number of domestic guests and overnight stays in Hungary has seen an increase in February this year compared to the same period last year.
According to a Thursday morning report by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the number of guests in February 2024 increased by 23 percent and the number of guest nights grew by 19 percent compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. As a result, a total of 883,000 guests spent 2.2 million overnight stays during the month.
The growth was primarily observed among foreign tourists, both in terms of visitor numbers and the nights they spent, with a 30 percent increase in guests and a 24 percent rise in overnight stays compared to February last year. A total of 428,000 international visitors spent 1.2 million nights at Hungarian accommodations. The most significant hikes in nights spent by foreigners were recorded in the eastern counties of Hungary, with Debrecen seeing a 63 percent increase, and the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza area experiencing a 55 percent rise in guest nights compared to the same period last year.
However, domestic tourism also showed an increase, with a 16 percent rise in guest numbers and a 14 percent increase in the number of guest nights compared to the previous year's same period. This implies that in February, 455,000 domestic visitors spent 1 million nights at local accommodations. The regional differences were not as pronounced as with foreign visitors, with the Bük–Sárvár tourist area seeing a 26 percent rise, and Budapest seeing a 25 percent increase in domestic guest nights.
The majority of the traffic was still catered to by commercial hospitality establishments, which accounted for 74 percent of all guest nights. However, private and other accommodation facilities saw a more significant increase in traffic compared to the previous year, with a 21 percent rise, as opposed to the 18 percent growth observed within commercial hospitality establishments.
