Budapest Zoo's Wildlife Rescue Center Saves Over 2,600 Animals Across 127 Species
In 2024, the Budapest Zoo's Wildlife Rescue Center successfully rescued 2,606 individuals from 127 different species.

According to data compiled by the Hungarian Bird Rescue Foundation, which operates as part of the zoo's conservation efforts, the majority of rescued animals were birds, totaling 1,301 individuals from 92 species.

Notable avian species aided include the blackbird, with 160 individuals rescued, and the white stork, with 44 individuals.

Other species assisted encompassed eagles, owls, falcons, and a variety of other birds.

Mammals accounted for 1,096 individuals across 22 species.

The most frequently rescued mammal was the eastern hedgehog, with 598 individuals receiving care.

Bats from 14 different species made up another significant portion with 449 individuals helped.

Other mammal species included squirrels, various dormice, and a beaver.

Reptiles and amphibians, while less numerous, were also part of the rescue efforts.

The center managed to save 206 reptiles from 11 species and 3 individuals from 2 amphibian species.

Two wildcat cubs, found in the neighboring Somogy County by the Duna–Dráva National Park Directorate in June, were also raised and rehabilitated by the zoo.

They were released back into their natural habitat in October near Kardosfa.

The 2024 efforts constitute the second-highest annual total of rescued animals since the zoo's wildlife rescue mission began.

This follows closely behind the record set in 2021 when 2,624 animals from 120 species were taken into care.

Over the past decade, the zoo's specialists have assisted more than 21,000 rescued animals.
