This Food Protects Against the Development of Type 2 Diabetes, and is Also Beneficial for High Blood Pressure
A team of scientists from the Open University of Catalonia, Spain, has established that adhering to a specific diet can reduce the risk of developing the disease.
This was reported by sports.kz, citing belnovosi.by.
The study involved 152 patients diagnosed with prediabetes, all of whom were aged 65 years or older.
Participants in the experiment were divided into two groups. The first group added 200 grams of sardines in olive oil to their diet every week.
The fish had to be consumed whole, including the bones, as they contain high amounts of calcium and vitamin D.
The diet of the second group remained unchanged.
In the group that did not incorporate sardines into their diet, 27% were at a high risk of developing diabetes.
However, among those who consumed fish every day, 37% were initially at risk. After one year, this figure decreased to 8%.
Moreover, improvements were observed in biochemical parameters, including a reduction in the insulin resistance index, an increase in "good" cholesterol and levels of hormones that accelerate the breakdown of glucose, as well as a decrease in blood pressure.
