This California Home Is Tailor-Made for Social Distancing

Complete with freestanding guest “pods” and plenty of indoor-outdoor spaces.

Way back in 2016—long before the phrase social distancing was a part of the lexicon—George Bevan conceived of a contemporary home for a middle-aged couple with three almost-adult children in the hills of Sonoma, California. Seen through the lens of 2020, it turns out that the final design is a nearly perfect match for the many challenges the current pandemic presents.

In the living room, the sofa sectional is by Roche Bobois, the cocktail table is by Timothy Oulton, the rug is by Tufenkian, and the lighting is by RH, Restoration Hardware.


In guest pods one and two, the shou sugi ban siding is by Delta Millworks, the outdoor furnishings are by Design Within Reach, the linens are by Brooklinen, the pillows are by RH, Restoration Hardware, and the interior lighting is by Vipp.


In the dining area, the table and chairs are by Pininfarina, the rug is from Tufenkian, the lighting is by Gabriel Scott, and the floors are by California Wood Floors.


Kitchen : The custom cabinetry is by Johannes Van Moorick in wood by Oakwood Veneer, the counters are by Lapitec, the custom steel island is by Schnitzkraft, the appliances are by Gaggenau, the fixtures are by Dornbracht, and the pocket window is by Fleetwood Windows & Doors.


Main Bedroom : The bedding on the Scandinavian Design bed is by RH, Restoration Hardware, the bedside tables are from Vintage Etc., and the bedside lighting is by Boffi. The rug is by Tufenkian, the floors are by California Wood Floors, the large sliding window is by Fleetwood Windows & Doors, and the custom steel staircase (left) is by Schnitzkraft.


Main Bathroom : The custom cabinetry is by Johannes Van Moorick in a wood by Oakwood Veneer, the counters are by Lapitec, and the custom mirrors are by Schnitzkraft. The lighting is by Matthew Fairbanks, the fixtures are by Dornbracht and Kallista, and the window is by Fleetwood Windows & Doors.


Office : The desk and chairs are by Scandinavian Design, the lighting is by Danese Milano, the rug is by CB2, and the windows and doors are by Fleetwood Windows & Doors.
