Tesco and Auchan Outsource Home Delivery Services to Dodo and Wolt

In a significant shift in retail logistics, Tesco and Auchan have announced the outsourcing of their delivery operations, impacting numerous employees and expanding service offerings.
Tesco and Auchan, two major players in the retail market, are transitioning their home delivery services to external partners Dodo and Wolt.

Tesco has confirmed that from now on, all delivery services will be handled by these companies due to positive experiences and the desire for increased efficiency.

This move follows years of Tesco operating a dual model, utilizing both in-house delivery drivers and contractors like Dodo in most rural stores since their inception.

The recent changes affect 89 delivery employees at Tesco, with the company stating that it has sought to provide alternatives for these individuals.

Informational sessions about available opportunities have been held by Dodo and Wolt at larger store locations, with slightly more than 10 percent of affected employees remaining at Tesco.

Additionally, starting April 1, all Auchan stores, including hypermarkets and supermarkets, will offer quick commerce delivery through Wolt.

This will allow customers to order both fresh and non-perishable food items as well as daily necessities with rapid delivery services.

According to Auchan's press release, the product selection will also be refreshed and expanded, featuring 3,200 items available for delivery via Wolt, with Budakalász offering up to 4,500 products.

Auchan will continue to maintain its own ordering platform alongside this new partnership.

This trend of outsourcing delivery services reflects a broader industry movement, as major retailers are increasingly finding in-house delivery operations less economically viable.

In March, Spar also announced a similar strategy, planning to transfer its online shop to Wolt by the end of the month.

Spar indicated that their transition would impact 133 employees involved in online sales, with over 60 percent of them offered positions in other areas of the company; however, it remains unclear how many accepted these offers.

Earlier statements from Gabriella Heiszler, the managing director for Spar in Hungary, pointed to challenges in maintaining profitability in online retail operations.

This perspective is shared among various retailers, indicating a prevalent trend toward viewing online investments as future-oriented, rather than immediately profitable.
