Surge in Patent Applications in Hungary Amidst Global Trends

Hungary sees a significant increase in domestic patent filings, contrasting with stable international activity in 2024.
In 2024, Hungary experienced a remarkable 34 percent increase in domestic patent applications, contrary to the relatively stagnant global and European patent activity, which saw only marginal changes.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reported nearly 274,000 international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in 2024, a mere half percent increase from the previous year.

China retained its leading position in international patent applications, filing over 70,000 patents, and also led in design protection filings.

The United States topped the charts for international trademark applications, with L’Oréal ranking as the top applicant.

Meanwhile, Egis Pharmaceuticals climbed to sixth place on the list of applicants, rising from eighteenth in 2023.

The growth in patent applications in Hungary has been attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence, digital communications, clean energy, and battery technologies.

On a global scale, the European Patent Office (EPO) received a total of 199,264 patent applications in 2024, nearly identical to the 199,452 applications recorded the previous year.

Switzerland continued to lead in per capita European patent applications.

For the first time, technologies involving artificial intelligence emerged as the most innovative area, delivering close to 17,000 European patent applications.

According to the EPO’s report for 2024, Samsung topped the ranking of the most innovative companies, followed by Huawei, LG, Qualcomm, and RTX.

Among the ten most active applicants were four European companies: Siemens, BASF, Ericsson, and Robert Bosch.

In Hungary, 139 European patent applications were filed with the EPO in 2024, marking a 27.5 percent increase from the prior year, representing both the highest number of European patent filings to date and the most significant annual growth in five years.

The Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (SZTNH) recorded 35,950 effective patents in the country, reflecting a 3 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The pharmaceutical sector remained the leading area for patents during this period, with 13,389 effective European patents, followed by the instrumentation, chemical, and electronic equipment sectors.

The number of patent applicants in Hungary rose by 26 percent over the last year.

Universities led the list of institutions submitting applications, with the University of Debrecen filing 30 applications and the University of Miskolc submitting 16. There was also a notable increase in utility model applications, up 43 percent, while national design protection applications rose by 12 percent and national trademark filings grew by 4 percent from 2023. Richter-Gedeon Nyrt.

continued to be the most active in trademark applications in the country.
