In a recent development regarding the construction of a new Danube bridge near Mohács, Hungary, the Austrian construction company Strabag is participating as a subcontractor after losing the initial tender.

The Hungarian government had opened bids for building a two-lane bridge, attracting three principal offers: Swietelsky at 316 billion forints, Strabag at 310 billion forints, and the Hungarian company Duna Aszfalt at 295 billion forints.

The contract was awarded to Duna Aszfalt, the lowest bidder.

Despite losing the bid, Strabag is contributing to the construction of infrastructure leading to the bridge.

This involvement comes at a time when the company faces criticism from key government figures, including Hungarian Minister for Construction and Transport László Palkovics, who publicly criticized Strabag for its past performance.

In particular, their handling of the M30 motorway section between Miskolc and Szikszó has been subject to scrutiny, with the project stalled and road sections closed due to construction issues.

Opposition politician Patrik Schwarz-Kiefer posted a video on January 17 showing Strabag's machinery on the building site, sparking speculation about their broader role in the project.

In response to queries, Duna Aszfalt noted Strabag's logistical advantage because of its existing operations on the nearby M6 motorway, enabling a competitive offer for subcontracting parts of the project.

This collaboration and Strabag's past performance have fueled discussions about tender processes and the structure of project management in Hungary, especially when earlier assessments indicated that Strabag would not be offered further contracts.

Nevertheless, the participation of the company underscores the complexities associated with large infrastructural projects and international partnerships.
