On January 19, 2006, a Slovak military aircraft, designated as an An-24, crashed into Borsó Mountain near Hejce, a village in northern Hungary.

The aircraft was returning from a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and was en route to Košice Airport in Slovakia at the time of the incident.

Tragically, 42 of the 43 military personnel aboard lost their lives, with only one, a 27-year-old officer named Martin Farkas, surviving the crash.

The An-24 departed from Pristina, Kosovo, carrying 35 passengers and a crew of eight.

It had been cleared to traverse Hungarian airspace and entered shortly after 7 p.m. local time.

However, communication with ground control was lost before 7:40 p.m. Just moments later, at approximately 19:40, the aircraft collided with the 800-meter Borsó-hegy, a mountain in the region.

Investigation into the crash was initially kept classified but was later declassified in 2020, revealing pilot error as the primary cause.

The report indicated that the flight crew failed to utilize the onboard instruments designed for altitude monitoring and relied solely on visual cues during their approach.

This miscalculation led to a catastrophic descent that did not account for the mountainous terrain.

Survivor Martin Farkas, an officer who happened to be in the rear of the aircraft at the time of the crash, sustained only minor injuries and was able to contact his wife shortly after surviving the incident.

He reported that until the crash, no unusual occurrences were detected during the flight.

The investigative findings underscore the necessity for adherence to instrument-based navigation, particularly in challenging terrain, to ensure the safety of flight operations.
