Significant Drug Seizure at Texas Border Highlights Ongoing Smuggling Challenges

U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepts nearly 900 kg of methamphetamine hidden in vegetable shipments.
On February 7, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the seizure of over 2,000 pounds (approximately 900 kg) of methamphetamine valued at $19 million (around 6.9 billion Hungarian Forint) at the Pharr International Bridge crossing into Texas.

The drugs were concealed among shipments of jalapeño peppers and cucumbers.

The detection occurred when drug-sniffing dogs alerted authorities to a suspicious truckload.

In total, officials discovered 8,206 packages of methamphetamine and 26 packages of heroin, which is valued at over $140,000 (about 51 million Forint).

Carlos Rodriguez, the director of the Pharr-Hidalgo-Anzalduas Port of Entry, remarked on the significance of this seizure in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.

In addition to this seizure, two other attempts to smuggle drugs through the Mexicali border crossing were thwarted by authorities.

In one instance, a vehicle driven by a Mexican citizen, who held a U.S. residency permit, was found to contain 92 packages of methamphetamine hidden within the spare tire, rear door, and speakers.

In another case, a 65-year-old woman attempted to cross the border with four pounds (approximately 1.8 kg) of methamphetamine taped to her torso.

The total value of the drugs seized in these two incidents surpassed $150,000 (around 54 million Forint).

The individuals involved in these smuggling attempts have been transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigators, who continue to examine the cases further.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by border control agencies in managing drug trafficking operations at the U.S.-Mexico border.
