Seven Suspects Surrender in Germany Over Budapest Attacks

Seven individuals connected to the Budapest attacks of February 2023 have surrendered to German authorities.
Seven young people, suspected of involvement in the February 2023 attacks in Budapest, have voluntarily surrendered to the German police, as reported by hvg.hu referencing the German news agency dpa.

According to their lawyers, these individuals reached out to the German federal prosecutor's office six months prior to their surrender.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 27, have agreed to cooperate under the condition that they will not be extradited to Hungary.

GIULIA BORSALINO, a lawyer from Leipzig, stated at a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday that the suspects would appear before an investigative judge at the federal court in Karlsruhe in the coming days.

The incidents in Budapest involved a group of both Hungarian and foreign nationals who carried out four different attacks, targeting individuals they believed were attending a neo-Nazi 'Day of Honour' event.

In response, Hungarian authorities initially arrested two German nationals and one Italian citizen.

They also issued European and international warrants for fourteen other suspects.

Among those initially detained was ILARIA SALIS, an Italian teacher, who was released in May 2023 after posting bail but remained under judicial supervision until her legal matters were resolved when she became a Member of the European Parliament.

The lawyers defending the surrendered suspects have cited concerns, attributing their caution against extradition to what they describe as conditions under a 'right-wing authoritarian regime' in Hungary, including 'inhumane prison conditions'.

They argue that the potential sentences their clients could face are excessively long, possibly up to 24 years, and allege that the legal proceedings in Hungary would not conform to the principles of the rule of law.

In a show of support, a solidarity demonstration was organized in Leipzig on Tuesday evening.

During the Berlin press briefing, the mothers of three of the suspects expressed their expectations for both regional and federal justice ministries to oppose extradition.

Despite these statements, there is no guarantee that extradition will ultimately be refused.
