Scores Support Cultural Food Fair
Scores of residents in the Virgin Islands converged at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park on Friday for the annual Cultural Food Fair event.
The event is part of the official calendar for the emancipation celebration. It was slated to take place last week Friday; however, due to the inclement weather was postponed to today.
Between 18 to 20 vendors participated in the event which started at 11 am, providing freshly cooked food and beverages as well as other craft items.
“We cannot celebrate our emancipation or any other celebration that we have without our Virgin Islands food. This is the food that sustained us through very difficult times, very difficult years in the past when we didn’t have all the money that we have now,” Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Natalio Wheatley said.
He added, “That cornmeal and that flour, the same johnny cake, water and flour, those are the things that help to sustain us even though we didn’t have money. So we must never forget our history and our culture because this is what has brought us to where we are today and when persons travel through the world; our visitors want to be able to experience a little bit that is unique about the Virgin Islands.”
He also called for more young persons to play their part.
“I wat to celebrate all of those persons who are working to keep our culture alive[but] I would like to see more persons, young people step forward and be the culture and history bearers here in the Virgin Islands,” he remarked.
In attendance were Cabinet Ministers and cultural icons such as Eileene L. Parsons, a former Legislator.
