Nine days following his death, the body of Alexei Navalny was released to his family.
The Russian opposition politician was one of the most vocal critics of President Vladimir Putin.
The body of
Alexei Navalny has been handed over to his mother, informed his press secretary Kira Yarmysh, who expressed her gratitude on X (formerly Twitter) to everyone who joined the call for the release of the body of the Russian opposition politician.
The press secretary also informed that Navalny's mother, Lyudmila Ivanovna, is still in Salekhard. The funeral preparations are still in progress, and it is not yet clear whether the authorities will intervene.
As previously reported by Index, Vladimir Putin's main critic died on February 16th at Russian penal colony No. 3 under unclear circumstances.
Initial reports suggested a blood clot could have been the cause of the Russian opposition politician's death. However, since relatives were not allowed to view the body, nor was it released to them, this led to suspicions that the politician's death may not have been an accident. The majority of the Western world and the Hungarian opposition have unequivocally held Putin responsible for Navalny’s death, while the Russians have blamed Washington and Brussels.
The 47-year-old politician had been in prison since 2021.
