Restoration of Budapest's Citadella Nears Completion

Extensive renovation efforts focus on sustainability and historical preservation
The Citadella in Budapest, Hungary, a historical fortress that has been closed and in decline for many years, is undergoing significant renovations as part of the National Hauszmann Program.

According to an update posted on the program's social media platform, notable progress has been made in landscaping the interior courtyard of the fortress, marking a key phase in the restoration process.

As part of the ongoing work, 59 ornamental trees and shrubs are being planted in the courtyard, including almond, ornamental cherry, crabapple, Judas tree, and magnolia.

The selection includes rare species such as the grey maple and Persian ironwood, aiming to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the site throughout the year.

The majority of the trees are pre-grown specimens, approximately 20 years old, weighing up to 300 kilograms.

Specialized equipment, such as cranes, has been employed to position these trees at their designated sites.

The winter season provides a suitable planting period due to the dormant state of the trees, allowing them ample time to establish roots before spring.

Gardeners are also making efforts to preserve existing valuable vegetation in the area, like the historic pomegranate tree, ensuring its continued presence for visitors to appreciate in the years ahead.

Beyond the planting of trees, the Citadella's redesign includes a focus on sustainable practices.

A rainwater harvesting system is being constructed to supply the irrigation system, while certain areas will be developed into green roofs.

Additionally, sun-exposed portions of the site will feature drought-resistant plants.

Upon completion by early 2026, the Citadella's green space will expand to 20,000 square meters, increasing by 50 percent.

Within the fortress's walls, a new public park exceeding 6,000 square meters will be accessible to all visitors.

This park will include amenities such as a café, an ice cream parlor, and a gift shop.

Moreover, a new exhibition entitled 'The Bastion of Freedom' will open in the cannon tower, detailing Hungary's historical struggles for independence.

The comprehensive restoration aims to blend historical conservation with modern functionality, ensuring the Citadella's prominence as a significant cultural and recreational venue.
