Pay Disparities and Structural Challenges Plague Hungary's Premier University

Pay Disparities and Structural Challenges Plague Hungary's Premier University

Faculty at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) face low wages and declining state support amid higher education challenges in Hungary.
Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), recognized as Hungary's premier academic institution, is grappling with significant financial and structural difficulties, according to faculty members.

Despite its high academic ranking within the country and on U.S. News & World Report's global list, the faculty at ELTE continue to face stagnating wages.

A professor from ELTE's Faculty of Science described the situation as 'humiliating,' with wages not increasing since 2023. This issue has led to faculty members earning less than interns at secondary schools.

The university remains one of the last state-maintained higher education institutions in Hungary, alongside the Academy of Music and the University of Fine Arts.

Other institutions, such as the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, have already voted in favor of transitioning to a different operational model.

The salary crisis is exacerbated by diminishing interest from potential new faculty and a shrinking number of state-funded student places.

University leadership faces the challenge of maintaining competitiveness while offering an attractive prospect to prospective students, amidst an environment of unbalanced resources.

Union representatives, like Gregor Anikó, head of the union at ELTE's Faculty of Social Sciences, have echoed these concerns, highlighting the poor financial recognition of university lecturers compared to their peers in secondary education.

The disparity widened following a recent salary increase for public educators, while university staff saw only partial benefit from earlier pay raises, which were not incorporated into base salaries and did not keep pace with inflation.

In 2023, ELTE introduced an internal salary minimum, yet this has not brought about substantial change.

Current average wages remain significantly below the national average for degree-holders.

A survey conducted by the university's Faculty of Humanities revealed only a small fraction of its full-time educators earn above the national average salary for degree holders.

There is an urgent need for improved remuneration, suggested union members and faculty alike, who also express concern over poor working conditions.

Meetings with government officials in 2022 concluded with promises for better financial terms, though no firm proposals have yet materialized.

ELTE's struggles come as state-funded university places decrease significantly, contributing to an overall reduction of available resources.

Despite statements from officials asserting an intent to increase state-sponsored places, the practical effects have triggered concerns about the prioritization of certain fields, notably technical and science over humanities and social sciences.

A key competitor in this landscape is the National University of Public Service (NKE), which has launched new teacher training programs offering substantial scholarships, dual degrees, and improved teaching conditions, drawing both students and faculty away from ELTE.

As Hungary's educational institutions navigate these changes, faculty members voice concerns about the impacts on the quality and sustainability of higher education, with potential long-term repercussions for the sector.
