Panama Considers Major LPG Pipeline Near Canal

A new infrastructure project could significantly enhance energy logistics in the region.
Panama is planning a substantial infrastructure project involving the construction of a pipeline designed for the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

A decision on this initiative is expected to be made within the year.

According to Ricaurte Vasquez, a senior official from the Panama Canal Authority, this new pipeline would facilitate the faster distribution of energy products from the U.S. and the Caribbean, while also freeing up capacity within the Panama Canal for more liquid natural gas (LNG) tankers.

The proposed pipeline system—a combination of transport and storage facilities—could enable the transfer of liquefied hydrocarbons amounting to the equivalent of up to one million barrels per day.

Vasquez emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental regulations while assessing the feasibility of developing this infrastructure.

The LPG pipeline, if constructed, would simplify the logistics of serving geographically distant consumers, thereby impacting the energy market positively for both the Caribbean and the United States.

Notably, it could benefit Japan, which is among the largest global buyers of LPG for both residential and industrial uses.

According to previous feasibility studies, the LPG throughput capacity of the Panama Canal could potentially increase to two million barrels per day within a decade.

This enhancement comes at a critical time when global demand for gas is rising.

Vasquez classified facilitating this demand through Panama as a primary objective, despite being a complex endeavor.

A decision regarding the infrastructure's development is anticipated imminently, possibly within the next twelve months.

The canal's significant capacity could lead to an increase in the number of LNG tankers allowed transit.

This announcement coincides with heightened interest in the Panama Canal due to a recent investment transaction involving BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, acquiring a majority stake in a Hong Kong company that operates several important ports globally, including two significant facilities servicing the Panama Canal.
