Netflix Faces Backlash Over AI Reconstruction of Gabby Petito's Voice

Netflix Faces Backlash Over AI Reconstruction of Gabby Petito's Voice

Controversy arises after the streaming giant uses artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of the murdered vlogger for a new documentary.
Netflix's latest documentary series, which explores the tragic story of Gabby Petito, has sparked significant controversy, with many individuals describing the venture as distasteful.

The company has employed artificial intelligence to reconstruct Petito's voice so that she can narrate her own diary entries.

Gabby Petito's mysterious disappearance in the summer of 2021 captured nationwide attention in the United States.

The case resonated across social media platforms, where users generated theories and speculated on her fate.

Petito's remains were eventually discovered, and her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, was named as a suspect in her murder.

Laundrie later fled and died by suicide.

Now, Netflix has produced a three-part documentary on the case featuring the AI-generated voice of Petito.

The intention was to allow viewers to hear the young woman's story from her own perspective.

Public reaction on social media has been largely negative.

Commentators have expressed discomfort with the decision, with one user describing the method as "very strange - perhaps even disrespectful - and truly revolting." Another post questioned, "Why did they do this?

It is horrifically uncomfortable."

Despite the criticism, the documentary's producers have defended their choice.

Michael Gasparro, the producer of the film, stated that they worked with the permission of the Petito family and aimed to tell the story as authentically as possible.

Gasparro remarked, "We felt it was very important to bring this to life.

Ultimately, we wanted to tell the story through Gabby as best as we could.

This is her story."

The use of artificial intelligence in the film industry is not new; however, such applications often ignite debates about ethics and respect.

A separate production, titled 'Brutalista', faced similar scrutiny after it was revealed that AI had been used to provide actors with a stronger Hungarian accent.

In light of the ongoing discussions surrounding the ethical use of AI in filmmaking, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is reportedly considering the introduction of new regulations governing the integration of artificial intelligence in film production to prevent future controversies.
