Man Arrested Following North Sea Shipping Collision

Oil tanker and container ship crash leaves one missing as investigation begins.
A shipping incident occurred Monday morning in the North Sea near East Yorkshire, England, involving a collision between an oil tanker and a container ship.

As a result of the collision, one person is reported missing, and search efforts have concluded, with authorities indicating a high probability of loss of life.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence, although his precise role in the incident remains unclear.

The container ship, identified as the MV Solong, was still ablaze by Tuesday afternoon.

Contrary to earlier reports, it has been confirmed that the vessel was not carrying hazardous materials at the time of the incident.

The Solong, measuring 141 meters long and with a carrying capacity of 9,500 tons, was en route from Scotland to the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands when it collided with the Stena Immaculate, a 183-meter-long oil tanker built in 2017, with a cargo capacity of approximately 50,000 tons.

The Stena Immaculate was transporting aviation fuel from Greece to HMLA (Helicopter Maritime Support Unit) stationed in Hull, England.

Following the collision, both ships caught fire.

Crowley, the operator of the Stena Immaculate, reported multiple explosions aboard the vessel, resulting in a breach of the cargo hold and the spillage of aviation fuel into the sea via the breach.

British environmental authorities have stated that they are closely monitoring the spread of the pollution, given that aviation fuel is highly toxic and poses a significant risk to nearby seabird colonies along the coast.

At this stage, it appears unlikely that the Solong can be salvaged.
