Israeli police detain two French military personnel ("gendarmes") with diplomatic status at a Christian church (the Eleona Church), which has been officially owned by France for 160 years and is shielded by diplomatic immunity.
The church is situated in East Jerusalem, and the arrests took place just as French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot was set to visit. He called off his visit because of the Israeli police presence at the location and the violation of diplomatic immunity.
