Hungary Triumphs Over Netherlands in Handball World Championship

Hungary secures a crucial victory against the Netherlands, advancing in the group stage of the Men's Handball World Championship.
The Hungarian men's handball team achieved a significant victory against the Netherlands in the group stage of the Men's Handball World Championship, held in Varaždin.

Prior to the matchup, North Macedonia secured a 29-20 win over Guinea, ensuring their progress to the main round.

This outcome also confirmed that Hungary, which had already secured its place in the main round, would not carry the maximum four points into the next phase.

Off the court, local Croatian police intervened rigorously in response to disturbances created by North Macedonian fans earlier in the tournament and removed some Hungarian fans before the match against the Netherlands, though no major incidents followed during the game.

On the court, the Hungarian team, missing players Hanusz Egon and Ónodi-Jánoskúti Máté, quickly fell behind in the opening minutes.

Adrian Sipos managed to bring the score level immediately after the Netherlands initially took the lead.

By the 4th minute, the Dutch had established a 3-1 advantage.

Despite several attempts by the Hungarian team coached by Chema Rodríguez, the Dutch maintained their lead, expanding it to 7-4 by the 9th minute.

Hungary gradually closed the gap, tying the game at 9-9 by the 16th minute with a goal from Bence Bánhidi.

The game remained tight, with Hungary finally taking the lead at 11-10 in the 19th minute after a goal from Bendegúz Bóka.

The Hungarian team increased their lead to 16-13 by the 27th minute and entered halftime with a 19-17 advantage.

After the break, both Zsolt Krakovszki and Chema Rodríguez received temporary suspensions, allowing the Dutch team to close in.

However, Hungary managed to re-establish a four-goal lead at 23-19 shortly after.

As the match progressed, Hungary maintained a narrow lead, entering the last ten minutes with a 30-28 advantage.

The Dutch team drew closer, reducing the gap to just two goals by the 54th minute, prompting a tactical timeout by Hungary.

In the final moments, the Netherlands came within a single goal of tying, three minutes before the end.

However, a critical save by Hungarian goalkeeper Kristóf Palasics prevented the Netherlands from leveling the score.

Hungary's Imre Bence then scored to restore a two-goal lead, followed by another decisive save from Palasics and a goal by Bendegúz Bóka, sealing Hungary's victory at 36-32.

Leading scorers for Hungary included Bendegúz Bóka, Zoltán Szita, and Máté Lékai, each contributing significantly to the victory.

The Hungarian team, aiming to reach at least the quarter-finals of the championship, will next face France on January 21, followed by matches against Austria and Qatar as they continue in the main round of the tournament.
